Boat Insurance Basics

Liability Insurance and Physical Damage

When operating any watercraft or vehicle there is the possibility for bodily injury or property damage to occur.  Liability insurance will provide a dollar amount in legal coverage, liability arising from loss of life or damage to someone else’s property as a result in ownership or operation of your boat.

Physical Damage will provide a dollar amount to repair or replace the hull, engines, sails, personal property and other equipment on board that is required to operate the boat if it is damaged by a peril covered in the policy.  Be sure to look for coverage that extends to cover your boat while it is stored on land or while you transport your boat over land by a trailer.

Those are the basic two components that make up your policy.  Other coverage parts include:

Loss Settlement- Agreed Value vs. Actual Cash Value

Agreed value policies will pay the amount shown on the policy if the boat is considered a total loss.  Damage resulting in a partial loss is paid for on a replacement cost less your deductible. This does not factor in depreciation

Actual Cash Value policy provides coverage up to the current market value of the vessel in the event of a total loss, taking into account depreciation and potentially other factors.

Personal Property and Emergency Towing Assistance

Two coverages every boater will find important.  Personal property can include clothing, personal effects, and sports and fishing equipment while those items are being loaded/unloaded and while aboard your boat.  Emergency Towing and Assistance will reimburse you for the cost you incur when you need emergency assistance for your boats such as towing to place for repair, delivery of fuel oil or parts or emergency labor.

Medical Payments Coverage

Medical Payments Coverage includes First aid treatment, ambulance hospital and other costs that result from someone being injured on your boat.  Be sure that this section has adequate limits of insurance.

Uninsured/Underinsured Boater Coverage

Like in Auto insurance this provides compensation for injuries or property damage from another boat that does not have insurance.  For boaters, this section is extra important as not all states require boat insurance.  Therefore it is more likely for someone not to have a proper insurance policy for their watercraft.
